Undergraduate Hands-On Experiences

Psychology provides undergraduate students can enhance their education and earn valuable practical learning experiences within the field of psychology by enrolling in Individual Work (IW) Courses: PSY4905 Independent Study, PSY4911 Research Assistant, PSY4940 Teaching Assistant, PSY4949 Intenership, and PSY4970 Honor Thesis.

The Psychology Department, College, and University Academic Compact have established credit restrictions for IW courses, which are provided below as they are deemed nonnegotiable for policy and protocol reasons.

Combine IW Credit Limitation (Overall IW Credit)

Students may only enroll in a maximum of 9 credits worth of IW courses. Under no circumstances will students be able to exceed this amount.

For students intending to enroll in PSY4970 Honors Thesis, it is mandatory to reserve at least 1 of the 9 overall credits permitted.

Single Course Credit Limit

In conjunction with the general IW 9 credit maximum, EACH IW course has a set limit of 4 credits students can enroll in.

  • PSY4940: Teaching Assistant
  • PSY4905: Independent Study
  • PSY4949: Internship Experience
  • PSY4970: Honor Thesis
  • PSY4911: Research Assistant is the sole exception to the 4-credit rule, allowing students to utilize all nine allotted IW credits if no other IW course has been undertaken.

See the Link Below for Specific Enrollment Information and Requirements for Each IW Course!

  • Research Experience
  • Internship Experience
  • Important Information To Know Before Enrolling

    • Once the combined IW 9-credit maximum or the 4-credit single course credit has been reached, students can only enroll in 0 credits (except PSY4905 and PSY4970), which will still appear on their transcript.
    • IW courses do not meet the criteria for 4k electives; they can only be used for the additional 3k psychology electives.
      • Students may still request enrollment if the additional psychology elective requirement has already been fulfilled and the student has not reached the single course limit or combined credit. However, the credit earned will not count toward their psychology major.
