Advanced Registration Processes
During the advanced registration period each Fall and spring term, undergraduate psychology courses are reserved for psychology majors only to ensure their timely progress through the program. Non-majors will have access to these courses during advanced registration but later. Specific registration dates will be available through the UF Schedule of Courses.
In the summer term, all psychology courses are open to students of all majors.
- Students tracking for psychology major or non-major honor students will need to wait until the designated registration time assigned by the advising office. This includes those needing psych courses to declare their outside minor or major or wishing to fulfill recommended/required courses for graduate school.
Currently, undergraduate psychology does not offer a waitlist for our courses. Departments offering the classes have the option to reorder waitlist positions.
Psych Course Registration Specifics
PSY3213L
Laboratory Methods is a required course for all psychology majors, and with over 2,200 students, it fills up quickly. To stay on track, it is recommended that psychology students enroll in this course before their 5th semester, as it is a critical tracking course (1-5). Failure to enroll in PSY3213L within this timeframe may result in an off-tracking hold assigned by the CLAS college advisor.
- Additionally, if the course is full, we cannot make exceptions to enroll you. Please plan accordingly.
Note: Psych advising cannot override this.
- Non-majors interested in BCN coursework should consider PSB3340.
- Psych BCN students: PSB3340 is a core requirement, and students cannot take PSB3002 and PSB3340, so they are automatically ineligible to enroll in PSB3002.
- Should, by chance, you be able to enroll in PSB3002, this course will not fulfill any requirement and is subject to removal from the BCN track.
Important: Students interested in the Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience (BCN) track should not enroll in PSB3002 as they will be ineligible for the BCN track.
Psychology 4000-level courses are offered every semester; however, the specific courses available can vary. Additionally, very few 4000-level courses are offered in the Summer. Therefore, students—especially psychology majors aiming to meet the 4000-level requirement—should plan to enroll during the Fall and spring terms.
- Do not wait until your graduating term to complete this requirement, as we cannot guarantee a seat or force you into a course if it is full.
- We understand that you may have tried to enroll in a particular course of interest for multiple semesters; however, as an overenrolled major, we still cannot guarantee the course you want will be available.
4000 Level Behavior Analysis & Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences Course Enrollment
- Seats are department-controlled for graduating seniors in the BCN and BA tracks every Fall and spring. An enrollment survey is sent via the Psychology Listserv and posted in the UF Schedule of Courses, allowing students to request enrollment.
- Once the period for graduating students to request enrollment has ended, the Psychology advising office will review the requests, contact eligible students, and enroll them. Students must ensure that any holds are cleared to prevent losing their seat(s).
- Failure to submit an enrollment request may result in the desired courses being full, as we cannot hold seats. After graduating students are enrolled, any remaining seats will be open for juniors in the designated track to self-enroll.
- Non-majors can register during the add/drop week on a first-come, first-served basis.
These will remain department-controlled for BCN/ BA students.
- Students in the Honors program with early registration will not be registered early. They must adhere to psychology-designated dates.
- Students who have not declared the Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience (BCN) or Behavior Analysis (BA) major cannot request enrollment in these courses. They must wait until seats have opened to non-majors.
- Approval of your DD/DM request by our office does not mean you are a psychology student. Your degree audit must reflect the declared major. You will not be enrolled during the time psych majors are able until you are a psych student, nor will we hold a seat.
Emailing the office will not expedite this process.
Students requesting enrollment in psychology courses after the drop/add deadline must first receive instructor permission. Approval from the instructor does not guarantee enrollment in the course. Several other factors must be reviewed to determine approval. Students must forward psych-advising@ufl.edu the email to which the instructor grants enrollment permission.
- Note: Hands-on Courses/ Individual Work (PSY4911, PSY4949, PSY4970, PSY4905, & PSY4940) are handled differently.
Other Registration FAQs
How do I register? Please see the UF Registrar website for steps!
Unfortunately, no. As our major is over-enrolled, we prioritize assisting our psychology students in completing their required coursework. You must wait for a space to become available until non-majors can enroll.
Psych advisors cannot add more than 18 credits. College of Liberal Arts & Sciences students must contact CLAS AAC college advisors to request a credit limit. All others must contact their college/department advisor for assistance.
Unfortunately, our office can only help with psych courses. You must contact the advisor(s) or Undergraduate Coordinator of the respective college/department for assistance with other courses.
Some courses have limited capacity and may not have enough seats for every student who wants to enroll. We cannot enroll students in a full course. If you encounter a closed course, we recommend the following steps:
- Keep Trying to Enroll: Continue to attempt enrolling in the course through the Schedule of Courses. Students often drop courses in the weeks leading up to the semester, making seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Monitor Drop/Add Period: There is no waitlist or reserved seats for psychology courses. Many seats become available during the drop/add period, so check ONE.UF frequently during that time for any openings
Unfortunately, no. We can only advise on Psychology requirements. Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) must contact the Academic Advising Center (AAC) college advisors. For all others, please get in touch with your advisor.
The Psychology Advising Office will not be able to remove any holds. The CLAS Academic Advising Center removes all holds for psychology majors related to tracking, etc. Other holds may be removed by payment of charges due or completing other requirements. You can see the exact nature of your hold by checking your ONE.UF account and clicking on the hold.
Please ensure that you have met all course prerequisites and that these are correctly reflected in your degree plan. If you have confirmed this but still encounter issues, email us at psych-advising@ufl.edu so we can offer additional information. Include the following details in your message:
- The error message you are receiving
- The prerequisite course you are having trouble with
- The course and section number you are trying to enroll in
Note: AP credit will not be accepted for enrollment for courses requiring a minimum grade (e.g., PSY2012 with a B or better).
University regulations allow a maximum load of 18 credits. Some colleges have differing maximum loads; refer to the college sections for specific information. Psychology advisors cannot enroll students over the 18-credit max. Please get in touch with a CLAS AAC advisor for the college approval process for CLAS students.
This varies by term. Please see the UF Registrar’s website for more information. Consulting with a UF Student Financial Aid and Scholarships advisor is highly recommended.
Psych advisors have no part in the registration priority process. This is handled at the university level.
Unfortunately, no. Per the college policy for transients, if you are taking a course in the Summer that is a prerequisite for a UF course in the Fall, you will not be able to register for the UF course until you receive a final passing grade in the prerequisite course. Be sure to send your transcripts from that institution to UF after grades are posted.
Every semester, there is a published deadline for dropping a course or withdrawing from the entire semester of classes. Please consult with a CLAS AAC college advisor on the college petition process.
Review the guidelines on dropping a course or withdrawing from the Undergraduate Catalog.
