Annual Walk Out of the Darkness
The 1st Annual Walk Out of the Darkness, walk to end suicide event took place on Saturday, March 23rd. This event sponsored by American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (https://afsp.org/) cohosted by North Florida Region of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, UF Psychology Club, Santa Fe College, Shands, and Walk Against Suicide Gainesville was a wonderful success! With over 100 participants, well over half of whom were Psychology students!! We have a great faculty and staff who also attended Walk Out of the Darkness, walk to end suicide.
A total of approximately 2 miles, the crucial message of this walk is to raise awareness and prevent suicide.
The second annual event is already in the planning stages, and we have begun seeking volunteers/coordinators. If you are interested, please contact Ron Chandler, Associate Instructional Professor.
Science of Care Summit
Dr. Susan Bluck, Professor, Director, Life Story Lab at the recent Science of Care Summit at UF brought together experts across the country to discuss multi-dimensional, humanistic approaches to end-of-life care. Dr. Susan Bluck (Psychology) and Dr. Carma Bylund (Health Outcomes and Biomedical Informatics) hosted the summit along with the assistance from Mary Kate Koch (Postdoc) Kiana Cogdill-Richardson (Grad Student), Esha Nair, Nic Rodriguez-Zingg, Sophia Maggiore (undergraduates).
We all die… but not everyone is afforded grace and dignity at the end of life. The goal of the recent Science of Care Summit at UF was to explore the science of how people care for one another, particularly at end of life. The summit focused on how humanistic values can be further infused into end-of-life care to alleviate suffering and promote quality of life. The event was hosted by Dr. Susan Bluck (Psychology) and Dr. Carma Bylund (Health Outcomes and Biomedical Informatics), funded through a three-year grant from the National Cancer Institute (NIH R01CA253330).
