Computer Purchases

Desktops and Laptops

For desktop and laptop computers purchased with UF funds: start up, grants, overhead, we recommend Dell as the computer manufacturer. The enterprise supported systems are Optiplex for desktops and Latitude for laptops. The University requires a minimum of three year warranty with corporate level support. Although if you are considering using the machine for a longer period of time, a five year warranty may be a good option to consider.

Follow these steps to purchase Dell equipment:

  1. Log into my.ufl.edu.
  2. Under "My self Service" select "myUFMarket."
  3. Scroll down to the "Punch-out" frame and select Dell.
  4. Select a machine and click on "Customize."
  5. Configure the options as you want them.
  6. Click "Add To Cart." This is not purchasing the system.
  7. Select "Save as E-quote."
  8. Enter the required information.
  9. You will receive an email when saving your quote. Please forward that email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for review. Indicate who will be placing your order.
  10. After IT support reviews your quote, they will notify your purchasing personnel that you would like to make the purchase.

Netbooks

For netbook computers we currently recommend the Asus EEE brand computer. These can be purchased through Amazon.com

Encrypted Storage

As per University policy, any mobile device that contains University data must be encrypted.

USB Thumb/Flash Drive

The University has negotiated special pricing for the Kingston Vault Privacy thumb/flash drives. You can get more information at this website: http://infosec.ufl.edu/usb/purchasing.shtml

Hard Drives

Encrypted hard drives come in various styles. You can purchase them with keypads, biometric readers, or electronic keys. Psychology IT recommends and uses the keypad model. Be sure to purchase a model that uses hardware encryption. This way if they pull the drive out of the case, they still can not read the data off of the drive.

Laptops/Netbooks/PDA's/Smart Phones

The University has a policy and standard regarding mobile devices and encryption. You can read their webpage on the subject at http://www.it.ufl.edu/policies/mobilecomputingstandard.html. The short version can be understood as "If you have University data, you must encrypt." The inverse statement is also included; if you can not encrypt the device, then you can not put University data on it.

Other Electronic Devices

Other electronic devices may or may not be supported by the IT office. We do have recommendations for other devices from previous experience. These devices are evaluated when the need is brought to our attention.
