Computer PurchasesDesktops and LaptopsFor desktop and laptop computers purchased with UF funds: start up, grants, overhead, we recommend Dell as the computer manufacturer. The enterprise supported systems are Optiplex for desktops and Latitude for laptops. The University requires a minimum of three year warranty with corporate level support. Although if you are considering using the machine for a longer period of time, a five year warranty may be a good option to consider. Follow these steps to purchase Dell equipment:
NetbooksFor netbook computers we currently recommend the Asus EEE brand computer. These can be purchased through Amazon.com Encrypted StorageAs per University policy, any mobile device that contains University data must be encrypted. USB Thumb/Flash DriveThe University has negotiated special pricing for the Kingston Vault Privacy thumb/flash drives. You can get more information at this website: http://infosec.ufl.edu/usb/purchasing.shtml Hard DrivesEncrypted hard drives come in various styles. You can purchase them with keypads, biometric readers, or electronic keys. Psychology IT recommends and uses the keypad model. Be sure to purchase a model that uses hardware encryption. This way if they pull the drive out of the case, they still can not read the data off of the drive. Laptops/Netbooks/PDA's/Smart PhonesThe University has a policy and standard regarding mobile devices and encryption. You can read their webpage on the subject at http://www.it.ufl.edu/policies/mobilecomputingstandard.html. The short version can be understood as "If you have University data, you must encrypt." The inverse statement is also included; if you can not encrypt the device, then you can not put University data on it. Other Electronic DevicesOther electronic devices may or may not be supported by the IT office. We do have recommendations for other devices from previous experience. These devices are evaluated when the need is brought to our attention. |
